Helping kids teeth – health and care

Although it’s not uncommon for children to snore, sleep apnoea is a condition usually associated with adults.

The most common cause of sleep apnoea in children is enlargement of the tonsils in the back of the throat and the adenoids in the back of the nose. Tonsils and adenoids grow quickly when a child is 2-7 years old. Removing the tonsils or adenoids in a minor surgical procedure cures sleep apnoea in up to 90 per cent of cases.

Being overweight is another cause that can affect the severity of sleep apnoea. The increase in childhood obesity has also led to an increase in childhood sleep apnoea.

Sleep is very important for children as it’s when the body releases growth hormones. Poor sleep patterns can affect growth and bone development and development of the dental arches, and malocclusions.

At iSmile Studio we can assess the growth and development of your child’s jaw and dental arch. We also work with sleep specialists that diagnose and treat sleep apnoea in young patients.

Children’s teeth begin to develop below the gum line before they’re even born. Children will have 20 ‘baby’ teeth, which begin to fall out at around age six to make way for their permanent set of 32 teeth.

The front teeth are sharp so they can bite and cut food and the large back teeth crush food.

Between six and 10 months of age, most babies start to get their first teeth emerging and by age three most children have all of their ‘baby’ teeth. ‘Baby’ teeth play an important role in helping young children to speak and chew.

The best way to ensure your teeth remain healthy is to eat a balanced diet, limit sugar, brush twice a day and floss at least once a day and visit iSmile Studio Balwyn every six months for a check-up and clean. To schedule a check-up for your child, speak to your friendly dental team on (03) 9888 5677.
