The correlation between gum disease and heart disease

Periodontitis is a serious infection that can lead to destruction of the bone and gums that hold teeth in place. It’s suggested that bacteria in plaque and gum disease can enter the bloodstream when your gums bleed.

Once in the blood stream, these bacteria can attach to fatty deposits in the arteries leading to inflammation, which may cause blood clots that can decrease blood flow to the heart and cause a heart attack or stroke especially if the build-up is in the carotid artery in the neck. Research has shown organisms that exist in the mouth, are also found in these fat deposits.

This procedure uses fine instruments to remove plaque and tartar from above and below your gum line. Root planning eliminates rough areas on the tooth root where the germs collect, and helps remove bacteria that contribute to gum disease.

Treating gum disease is one factor in reducing the risk of heart disease. Other major contributing risk factors include smoking, being overweight, diet, family history, high cholesterol and diabetes.
