Autoimmune disease and its effect on oral health

Your gums are the most important aspect of your oral health. It is, after all, your gums that support your teeth and help to keep them in place.

It is equally as important to brush your gums to remove plaque as it is your teeth. Gingivitis is when gums become inflamed and infected and bleed when you brush and floss. Gingivitis can be treated and reversed, but left untreated it can develop into periodontal disease, which can be managed but not cured.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in Australian adults and its severity can be exacerbated in people who have autoimmune health conditions, some of which include;

  • Lupus – can inhibit saliva production and cause dry mouth, which can lead to gum disease and cavities
  • Systemic Sclerosis – a disease that causes the hardening of the skin, especially around the hand and face. This can make cleaning teeth difficult as patients find it difficult to open their mouth wide.
  • Immunoglobulin Deficiencies – affect white blood cells, which make antibodies to fight bacteria, such as those that cause gum disease.

There are other autoimmune diseases, which can also have a detrimental effect on your gums and oral health. At iSmile Studio our holistic approach considers how to minimise these effects on your oral and general health so you can enjoy greater oral health and wellbeing.
